This website is about the poet Julia de Burgos (1914–1953).
Julia de Burgos was born on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico (pictured above), where the most common language is Spanish; most of her poetry was written in Spanish, and her work as a whole was deeply influenced by her Puerto Rican heritage.
Puerto Rico was annexed by the United States in 1898 after the Spanish-American War and became a territory in 1917. De Burgos was upset with Puerto Rico's status and colonial past, and this is apparent in her poetry.
